Constitution Amendment: Lawmakers propose 6-year single tenure for Nigerian President

Date:

A gathering of 35 legislators, known as Reformers, has proposed significant changes to the 1999 Constitution, including the presentation of a six-year single residency for the President and the governors.

The legislators are additionally proposing a modification to the Constitution to make two vice presidents from the southern and northern parts of Nigeria.

One other major proposal canvassed by the group is the rotation of the Presidency between the six geopolitical zones and holding of all elections on the same day.

The lawmakers, led by Ikenga Ugochinyere, informed the journalists on Monday at the National Assembly that they had drafted fifty proposed changes and that six of the bills had been placed on the House floor.

“Constitutional Amendment to provide that the President and the 1st Vice President shall come from the same part of the country (north or south) and the 1st Vice President shall become President whenever the President becomes incapacitated, i.e., V.P. (Succession), V.P. (Administration and Economy),” Ugochinyere said.

Ugochinyere stated that the nation’s constitution revealed a significant gap that needed to be filled.
